O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. She advanced to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills similar to Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil made it to the final two in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil received a call right away from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
